CIMNE Seminar -"Multiscale and multilevel finite elements", by Javier Principe

Multiscale and multilevel finite elements are widely used in computational fluid and solid mechanics although with very different objectives. The need of stable formulations in computational fluid mechanics has driven the development of stabilization methods which can be understood as enrichment methods under the variational multiscale framework. On the other hand, the need of capturing small scale features of the solution, usually generated by strongly variable material properties, motivated the development of the multiscale finite element and finite element square methods. An overview of these methods will be presented and their relation to domain decomposition methods will be discussed.
Javier Principe is Professor (Agregado) at the Department of Fluid Mechanics, Barcelona East School of Engineering (EEBE), UPC. After a PhD in computational mechanics he was Juan de la Cierva fellow at CIMNE where he continues collaborating to the development of the high performance computing code FEMPAR using domain decomposition methods and to the application of variational multiscale methods to study turbulent flows. He received the Juan Carlos Simó Prize 2015 by the Spanish Society on Numerical Methods in Engineering (SEMNI).
